Real-Time Algorithm Loophole

Every day, I actively seek new and inspiring content. However, I’ve noticed a trend — I’m falling into the algorithm trap, consuming only content curated specifically for me. How do I correct this pattern? How do I break free from the confines of filtered, raw, and thought-provoking content?

We spend an average of 3 hours and 15 minutes on our phones daily. That time encompasses listening to curated Spotify playlists, endlessly scrolling through Instagram, and sending quick updates to muted family group chats. This begs the question: is the content we’re consuming truly worthwhile? The answer lies in how we define content and what our objectives are. For most, the desire is to learn, grow, or find inspiration. But is that music playlist sparking growth? Is Instagram encouraging you to improve your photography? Or are you stuck in a loop designed to keep you stagnant?

Pause and ask yourself as you navigate through more ‘top-tier’ content:

“What value does this bring to my life?”

To address this, here’s my strategy to find loopholes:

1. Limit Doom Scrolling: Utilize app locks, set timers, and consciously redirect your attention when you catch yourself scrolling aimlessly.

2. Engage with Real-world Experiences: Attend museums, art shows, indie films, movies, concerts, and local events.

3. READ: Embrace reading for pleasure, for learning new topics, or simply anything and everything that intrigues you.

4. Manage News Consumption: Minimize exposure to lengthy, opinion-laden news sources. Opt for concise, factual mediums like select YouTubers or 15-minute podcasts.

5. Diversify Content Sources: Don’t confine yourself to the same platforms for daily content. Explore new sources.

6. Take Strolls: You’ll be surprised by what insights a simple walk can offer.

7. Embrace Shared Content: Pay attention to what your friends share; they might introduce you to new content ecosystems.

8. Foster Diverse Connections: Surround yourself with individuals who hold differing opinions. Homogeneity can foster stagnation.

9. Document Everything: Carry a commonplace book to declutter your mind and organize your thoughts.

10. Capture Moments: Utilize your phone’s camera to snap pictures or record videos. Whether it’s a fascinating label or a breathtaking sunset, document your experiences.

By implementing these strategies, I aim to break free from the confines of algorithm-curated content and embrace a more diverse and enriching content landscape.
